"Lucid Puppy 5.2.5 is the most leading-edge Lucid ever. It has Bash 4.1.0, Syslinux 4.03, and e2fsprogs 1.41.14, the latest from Ubuntu Natty. It now has JWM 500, up from 493. Gnumeric 1.10.13 is a necessity because our forum member yarddog had posted a bug to Gnumeric that is corrected in 1.0.13. Lucid 5.2.5 uses the Woof of FEB 28 replacing the Woof of NOV 28 for 3 months of progress in Woof development. All of the favorite Puppy programs are there in their latest versions. Check out Pburn by zigbert which now compares favorably with Nero Linux. Gnome-mplayer 1.02 compiled by forum member ttuuxxx is a substantial improvement and now works well with both the Openbox and JWM window managers. All this and the low overhead that makes Puppy fast, friendly and fun." --http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02203
Lucid Puppy acquires it's appellation from the fact that it uses Ubuntu packages from Lucid Lynx. I have been running Lucid Puppy 5.2.5 on an old 300Mhz IBM PII with 192M RAM and it is amazing how well everything works under this amazing little distro. Dealing with a few web coding projects I find it a little more responsive when booted to Lucid Puppy over the legacy OS. Lucid Puppy is becoming my boot of choice on my old P4 as well. The quality and stability of open source software is beginning to outshine many of the commercial offerings available for the same tasks, and Lucid Puppy is an excellent platform to showcase open source programs.
